I have a question for Mike. Let’s say you have a child, let’s say he attends public school. Let’s say the local school board votes to teach creationism in lieu of evolution. Let’s say you don’t have the option of putting your child in private school (you’re poor), or moving to another school district (you care for your morbidly obese wife who can’t leave the house), and you can’t homeschool him (your job at blip.tv requires you to be present 12 hours a day). I assume you’d have a problem with the school board’s choice (you previously stated that teaching evolution and creationism side by side is fine with you).
So what would you do?
You’re misunderstanding my position. Many have, so I can hardly blame you for doing so… I’ve obviously done a poor job of explaining my position and reasoning.
I don’t want to see creationism taught in lieu of evolution, or even side-by-side as a credible alternative theory. I just want its existence to be mentioned, and for the teacher to explicitly say that it’s not supported by science… that it’s religion and faith, and very different… and that science says something very different.
It’s actually an ideal way for a teacher to explain the special nature of science.
And if the school board voted to teach creationism in lieu of evolution I’d personally run for school board president so I can kick those backwards idiots out of town.
